I may have to re-think my cello idea: a nice new cello costs $800-1600 for a good one, $400 for a crappy one. Lessons are pricey, etc.
Maybe I should consider the banjo! The men on my mom's side of the family are/were all banjo players. Perhaps I should carry the torch....

You could always go for viola, not as high as a violin, not as low as a cello. I do so love the cello though!
Talk to Kara about the banjo! She took banjo lessons for a while. If she's not currently using it, maybe you could borrow hers...
Although I love the cello, the banjo totally rocks and would be a fun alternative.
