Devendra Banhart
Erika, Alex, I, and couple of other fine folks went to see Vetiver last night in L.A. If you have not heard of, nor listened to Vetiver, this should be high on your priority list. After too manyt cocktails, and much chatter, we flitted over to Fred 62 in Los Feliz. Lo and Behold! Devendra Banhart (whom we had just seen perform with Vetiver, is also the producer for Coco Rosie, Diane Cluck et al, and a fine musician, vocalist, and songwriter in his own right) comes in and sits down in the booth across from us. Erika and I could barely concentrate, as you could imagine. At any rate, it inspired me to recommend some really good Devendra Banhart (and related) stuff to those of you who would like/are not familiar with his work. So, here are some suggestions....
Devendra Banhart: Cripple Crow or Rejoicing of the Hands (the latter being my favorite)
Vetiver: Vetiver (and watch for a forthcoming new album!!)
Diane Cluck: Oh Vanille
Coco Rosie: Noah's Ark
Joanna Newsom: The Milk-Eyed Mender (she also plays on Vetiver's album)
Yes--he looks a little like Charlie Manson, but in this really elegant, not-serial-killerish way, no?
