Spring in Fall

K and I are going with my Cornish students to see Compagnie Heddy Maalem's performance of The Rite of Spring on Saturday night!



Opening night was in 1913, with musical score by (my beloved) Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Vaslav Nijinski. Interesting enough, the original choreography was never written down, and now The Joffrey Ballet has exclusive rights to perform what is their interpretation of what the original choreography was, based on reviews, diary entries, and a few written accounts.

The performance we are seeing is choreographed by Heddy Maalem, a West African dancer, and he says it is a "furious and bold" commentary on living in a warring, bustling city of 12 million people.
