More on my new girlfriend

Kelly and I went to see Ms. Holland perform in Hollywood last night and it only reinforced my idea that she is my girlfriend waiting to happen. Not only did I realize that she and I have the same body type (which made me feel even better about the prominence of my hips, boobs, and ass--our points of similarity) but she and I have the same crazy stubborn streak. She plays the audience with an electrifying and paradoxical mix of come-hither and "back the fuck off." It is as if she says, "Ask of me, but don't ask too much or I will [to use my mother's southern expression] bow up on you," meaning of course, "I will refuse to do what you ask of me simply because I can." I loved it.

Most notably, she played a very unexpected "Do You" from Escondida, "Stubborn Beast" from Springtime, and "The Littlest Birds" from Catalpa--the last, of course, being my absolute favorite. These three songs form the triumverate of my emotional life at this particular moment, so I felt totally in tune with the mood of the show/her mood. Now, if she had played "Roll My Blues" I think I might have gone deaf, dumb, and blind from sheer overwhelm.

Toward the end of the show she said, "well, I'm done with the songs I wanted to play, so what do you want to hear?" People shouted out titles of songs and she would say, "naw, I'm not gonna play that." She did agree, however, to work through a fantastic version of "Old Fashioned Morphine" on a homemade fiddle which, she informed us, was made by the "stupid mother fucker" about whom "Do You" is written. She was awesome. "The Littlest Birds" closed the show and I called out that request. If you know anything about my intense love for this woman you will know of my intense love for this song and how insanely happy it made me to hear it live and at my request. It may even inspire a tattoo in the very near future....
