Rockin' that Shite

I had an interview with Scripps College on Tuesday for a part time teaching position and it went very well! I went in overly prepared (which, as most of you know, is my m.o.) and I think that made a good impression on them.

If I get the job (I find out in 2 weeks), I'll teach Writing 50 which is required of all first year students. It's a class on argument/reading and writing critically. I took in a course description on how bodily identity is formed and performed in American Lit. I chose Delia's Doctors, Eva's Man, The Handmaid's Tale, and Gardens in the Dunes as primary texts, and Kara Walker's installation art as the closing assignment. I brought in some of her art work and ended up teaching the hiring committee (5 professors---SO intimidating!!) about her work--it was awesome! I also told them I would do weekly assignments/in-class writing responses to Slate Magazines "medical examiner" section articles. I brought in a recent article on whether or not British or American men are more healthy (apparently, British men are but they are unsure why). I think they were pleased with this, as well.

I left feeling good about the interview and if I don't get it, it won't be for lack of effort, experience, and preparedness!! But I will post more info as to my employment status as it becomes available. No matter what, it was good practice since I plan to go on the job market for tenure-track jobs this fall. Those interviews (should I get one) are supposed to be intense, so this was a good dry-run. Also, Scripps just posted a job announcement for a full-time/tenure track position in American Studies for 06-07. That would be so fantastic! Scripps would be a phenomenal first job for me (since the first job we take is often our "stepping stone" to bigger universities). However, it could also end up to be a great place to spend the rest of one's career.

After the interview, I went home and slept for almost 4 hours. I haven't slept that well in months....
