"It's a small thing to rage inside your own bowl." --Anne Sexton

At the End of this Burning World

I just realized what my insomnia sounds like: a harp and harpsichord.

I've been obsessed with Joanna Newsom's album in part because it smacks of my fruitless attempts at rest. Specifically, the harp on "Bridges and Balloons" and the harpsichord on "Peach Plum Pear" both sound like the frantic grace that is insomnia (and it is this paradox that makes it so fucking hard to sleep). To top it all off, "Sadie" just kills me.

So, here it is: an insomniac's autobiographical sketch
1. "En Gallop," Joanna Newsom
2. "Lilac Wine," Jeff Buckley
3. "Throughout the Dark Months," Cocteau Twins
4. and 5. "Engine Driver/On the Bus Mall," The Decemberists
6. "The Body Breaks," Devendra Banhart
7. "Pale Yellow," The Ditty Bops
8. "Between the Bars," Elliott Smith
9. "These Days," Nico
10. "Menuett (for cello)," JS Bach
